Managing Your Account
How do I create a new Sanctum account?
To create a new unranked account, click the create
account link in the menu bar along the left edge of this page,
and fill out the form. (The menu bar should always be visible on the left edge
of every page at this site.) Your randomly-generated password will be e-mailed
to you immediately, so you must enter a valid e-mail address. After you receive
your password, you can log in.
How do I change my password? Click the edit
account link in the menu bar along the left edge. Log in using
your current password. Once you're in, you can change your password. You can
also choose a new reminder phrase or select a new avatar here.
- Your password must contain letters and digits only. No other characters
are allowed.
- The maximum length is 15 characters.
- Your password is case-sensitive. Fooand foo
are two different passwords.
- Try to make your password difficult to guess. Avoid using an everyday word
as your password.
We recommend that as soon as your password arrives, you
change it promptly to something that's easier for
you to remember.
Do not share your password. NIOGA
staff and Sanctum magistrates will never ask for your password.
How do I rank an account?
Visit the buy
cards link and buy $9.95 or more of cards for your account.
You can make one large purchase, or any number of smaller purchases, over any
period of time, that add up to this amount.
Account Privileges
Can I change my account name?
Sorry, no. Account names are permanent, and cannot be edited or changed. However,
account names are case-insensitive, so you may use any mix of upper-
and lower-case letters in your name each time you log in.
One brute-force method is to rank a 2nd account with your desired name, and
then use the Account Transfer tool to transfer all cards from your old
account to the new one. Both accounts must be ranked for this to work. This
permanently closes your old account. Note that your old record and rating will
not be transferred to the new account.
Can I have more than one account?
Yes, you may have as many accounts as you wish to create. You may have any number
of unranked and ranked accounts.
NIOGA reserves the right to periodically purge any unranked accounts that
haven't been used in a long time. Our policy is that we'll send a mass e-mail
to all accounts' e-mail addresses, asking for a response. If we don't hear from
you, we'll assume those accounts are deadwood.
Can I use somebody else's account?
Can they use mine? No. Under our User Agreement, which you accept
whenever you launch Sanctum, each account may be used only by the account's
owner. Accounts cannot be shared.
Choosing a House for a New Account
Why must I choose a house for my new account?
Briefly, you choose a house so that we can give you a playable 60-card
starter deck.
- Every new unranked account comes with a free 60-card starter deck.
- The minimum legal deck size is 30 cards.
- If we just gave you 60 completely random cards, you probably wouldn't be
able to build a legal 30-card deck!
- So a starter deck is weighted toward 1 specific house.
As long as you play for free, and you only have 60 cards, you'll find it easiest
to just use your chosen house for all of your games with this account. If you
want to try another house, you can make a new unranked account.
What's in a 60-card starter
deck? Every 60-card starter deck is distributed as follows.
- Your chosen house is simply the house you chose when you created
your account. You get 1 Rare, 5 Uncommons, and 19 Commons
in your chosen house.
- Look at your chosen house's primary
mana type. There's exactly 1 other house
that also uses your primary mana type as its primary mana type. Call
that house your coprimary house. You get 3 Uncommons and 12
Commons from your coprimary house. (For example, Making's
primary mana type is Order, and the other Order-primary house is Justice,
so Justice is Making's coprimary house, and vice versa.)
- Look at your chosen house's secondary mana type. There are exactly 2 other
houses that use your secondary mana type as their primary mana type.
Call these your 2 cosecondary houses. You get 1 Uncommon and
5 Commons from each cosecondary house, for a total of 2 Uncommons
and 10 Commons. (Continuing the above example, Making's secondary mana type
is Will, and the two Will-primary houses are Abomination
and Mind, so these are
Making's two cosecondary houses.)
- Now we've covered 4 of the 12 houses in Sanctum. The other 8 houses are
unrelated houses. You get 1 Common from each unrelated
house, for a total of 8.
- And that makes a total of 60 cards. (By rarity, you get 1 Rare, 10 Uncommons,
and 49 Commons.)
Do I have to always play my
chosen house? No. You can build decks in any house, and play
games using any house. The only limitation is the cards you have. The
more cards you buy (or otherwise acquire), the more houses and decks you'll
be able to build.
Even if you have only a free 60-card starter, you could still build
decks in any of the 12 houses! Of course, in 11 of those houses, your deck wouldn't
be able to cast very many spells, so it would be pretty weak. Still, you're
free to do it if you like!
How do I choose a house for
a game? Sanctum's rule of thumb is: A deck has a house.
Every time you build a deck, you choose the house for that deck. Hence, to choose
your house for a game, (a) first build some decks in that house, and then (b)
just select one of those decks when the game starts. You do (a) on your own
time, well before the game starts, and you do (b) as part of the game start-up
procedure.
You can freely switch your deck and house when each new game starts. In competitive
play, you should expect your opponent to switch decks and even houses
for every new game, just to prevent you from anticipating what she'll use. (And
likewise, she'll expect you to switch.) It follows that having 2 to 3 good decks
in different houses can make you more competitive.
Can
I change my house during a game? No. Once a game starts, your
house is fixed until that game ends. Your house determines:
At intermediate skill levels and higher, your house also strongly influences
the strategy and tactics you'll use in your deck, and thus the way you build
your deck. Different houses can have very different styles of play.
Troubleshooting
What if I don't receive my Sanctum password?
You should receive your password within a few minutes, but in rare cases it
may take as long as an hour. If you've waited more than an hour, write to
support@playsanctum.net .
My password isn't working! What could be wrong?
Passwords are case-sensitive. They must be typed exactly as they
appear, including uppercase letters. If this still doesn't work, write to
support@playsanctum.net .
I forgot my password. How can I have it sent to me?
If you had previously used edit
account to create a reminder phrase, then you can use
the automated reminder system. If you answer
your own reminder phrase correctly, the server will automatically send your
account password to the e-mail address listed in your account.
- If you didn't add a reminder phrase, then this won't work.
- If your account's e-mail address isn't up-to-date, then you won't receive
the e-mail.
