Before You Download

What are the minimum system requirements to play Sanctum?

  • Windows 98, NT, 2000, or XP
  • 24 MB RAM
  • 40 MB disk space
  • 800 x 600 screen resolution, 256 colors
  • Internet connection

Does Sanctum run in a browser? No. Sanctum uses its own Internet connection. However, some online help topics will open a new browser window pointing to NIOGA's Sanctum web page.

How do I get a copy of Sanctum?

  1. You can always download the latest version of Sanctum by clicking on the download link in the menu bar along the left edge of this page. (The menu bar should always be visible on the left edge of every page at this site.) Follow the instructions there.
  2. Or, you may have a CD that already has the Sanctum installation file.
  3. Numerous free download sites also provide the Sanctum installation file.

Caveat: If you use methods #2 or #3, you may get an older version of Sanctum, which will force you to upgrade when you try to connect. If this happens, try method #1.

How large is the Sanctum installation file?

  • The Full installation file is about 20 MB. If you're new to Sanctum, this is what you need.
  • A Service Pack installation file is about 1.5 MB. If you already have a recent version of Sanctum installed, then you may be able to use this instead.

Installing Sanctum

How do I install Sanctum?

  1. Use Windows Explorer to locate your installation executable file.
  2. Run the installation executable. A Full version will install Sanctum, and a Service Pack will upgrade your existing Sanctum installation.

How do I log into Sanctum?

  1. Connect to the Internet.
  2. Launch Sanctum. By default, the installation file adds a shortcut to Sanctum in Start | Programs | NIOGA | Sanctum.
  3. On the first screen, you can click Create Account to make a free Sanctum account. Your password will be e-mailed to you, so you must enter a valid e-mail address.
  4. Click Log In, and enter your user name and password. You may also type a Description text now, which other players will see when they click on you in the Lobby. Click Continue to go to the next screen.
  5. Click Play to connect to the Lobby, or “Great Hall”. Here, you can chat with other players online, and challenge or be challenged to play a game.

Troubleshooting

I received a “corrupt install” error when attempting to install Sanctum. What should I do? Sanctum's full installation file is about 20 MB. Some older browsers stop downloads after ~12 MB, but they don't tell you that the file is incomplete. If you receive a “corrupt installation detected” message, try the following:

  1. Use Windows Explorer to locate your installation file.
  2. Right-click on the installation file, and choose “Properties”.
  3. Verify that the file size is correct.

If the file size is smaller than expected, try downloading Sanctum again.

Otherwise, write to us at support@playsanctum.net.

I'm behind a firewall. What ports do I use to connect? Use any of the following ports:

  • 6667
  • 5190
  • 3000 or 4000 (standard Microsoft game ports)

I'm behind a proxy server. How can I disable it? Your system may be configured to use a proxy server for Internet access, when it doesn't actually need one. Try the following.

  1. Open Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  2. Click Internet Options.
  3. On the “Internet Properties” dialog, click the “Connections” tab.
  4. In the “Local Area Network (LAN) settings” section, click the LAN Settiings... button.
  5. In the “Proxy server” section, uncheck the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” option.

My ISP is America Online. I can connect to the Internet, but not to Sanctum. What should I do? AOL users who have "Parental Controls" set on their accounts will not be able to connect to Sanctum. "Parental Controls" causes your account to use an AOL proxy server that blocks the ports Sanctum uses.

The only solution is to use the AOL Master account to remove "Parental Controls" from your AOL account. We are happy to discuss this with concerned parents; please write to us at support@playsanctum.net .
